Along Hagenstakendreef, on the north-west side of the former hippodrome, lies a cleared section of the Forest, a recent ‘verdunning’ or ‘éclaircie’. I pass by it fairly often, wondering why it has been done.
Often such measures are to create, or rather, recreate habitat and the nearby Highland Cattle on the racecourse are hard at it.
So I’m waiting to see what comes. For now, that very pollinator friendly pioneer plant, the Spear Thistle, is proverbially making hay whilst the sun shines. The ladybird has a front row seat.
