      Hard(wo)man

      Carpinus betulus

Hornbeam is a compound noun. Horn describes the densely hard wood and ‘beam’ comes from the same North European word family as ‘boom’, or tree. Think ship’s beams and beamed cottages. In French it is more charming.

The soft two-toned green here belies the strength within. Here we see the developing winged seed bracts, often loosely called samaras, awaiting autumn wind dispersal.
