      Pear-shaped Puffball

      Spent lungs

Once white and reputedly edible, these pear-shaped puffballs, ๐ฟ๐‘ฆ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘‘๐‘œ๐‘› ๐‘๐‘ฆ๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘“๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘š๐‘’, have already blown out their spores, leaving behind a cluster of tobacco-coloured empty sacs.

It is the only puffball that prefers decaying wood. You may know its giant cousin from open fields, perhaps even having fried thick white slices in butter with garlic and parsley, seasoned generously.

Latin lovers, Romeo apart, may be quietly chuckling at the name. Lycoperdon translates as wolf fart.
