The equinox approaches and today’s plant is the little wolf, 𝐻𝑢𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑢𝑠 𝑙𝑢𝑝𝑢𝑙𝑢𝑠, or the hop. It’s native to Belgium, here liking the woodland margin, disturbed, damp ground and particularly light. All the better to scramble up towards.

It’s a bine, a subset of vines, the distinction being it doesn’t use suckers or tendrils for purchase. When viewed from above it twines clockwise around the host and uses little stiff, downward-pointing hairs to hold on.
