      Guelder Rose

These heavy, drooping clusters of translucent scarlet berries are indicative of the Guelder Rose.

But itโ€™s not a rose; it does have rose-like white flowers but the berries really arenโ€™t hip.

A cultivated form was developed in the eponymously named province, but the wild one is native, a regular feature of our hedgerows. The fruits are not first, succulent pickings for birds, but, later in the year, should winter take an unlikely turn, they will take them gladly enough.
