The Forest has been a hive of industry over the centuries but little remains of the old ways. Charcoal production, oak bark for the tanneries, sand and loam dug from hollows were just a few of the opportunities for small-scale exploitation.

But there is one that still survives, one which I spotted now that the trees are bare of leaf. Magician’s hats. See them taking shape nicely on the fallen tree in the photo. There’s a particularly good one in the centre.
