I’d never associated fungi with the summer, rather as denizens of damp, dank leaf litter and field around the equinoxes
Yesterday I came across this one, a Rooting Shank, Hymenopelis radicata. It gets its moisture and nutrients from deep within an old rotting beech stump via a long ‘root’, its shank continuing deep into the organic matter.
‘Shank’ is an old English word that means leg, or more precisely the lower part between the knee and ankle. Edward I of England, 1272 - 1307, was nicknamed ‘Longshanks’.
