Those neat-looking ridges on the Ganoderma brackets seem to count out the years, like tree rings on a stump. But they do not. Each line marks only a pause in growth, not a winter passed. Drought, cold, injury, or a change deep inside the trunk can all make the fungus hesitate and start again. What looks like a fungal calendar is really a diary of interruptions.
