Elderberry

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫

The Elderberries are nearly over, but in shadier parts some can still be found for the syrup, ratafia and wine-making enthusiasts.

The genus name 𝑆𝑎𝑚𝑏𝑢𝑐𝑢𝑠 is associated with the ancient 𝑠𝑎𝑚𝑏𝑢𝑐𝑎, a musical instrument. Later the same name was also used for pipes and flutes made from hollowed elder stems, whose soft pith could easily be removed. Budding whistle-makers, however, may have to wait for spring when the young shoots are most easily worked.
