      Elderberry

The Elderberries are nearly over, but in shadier parts some can still be found for the syrup, ratafia and wine-making enthusiasts.

The genus name ๐‘†๐‘Ž๐‘š๐‘๐‘ข๐‘๐‘ข๐‘  is associated with the ancient ๐‘ ๐‘Ž๐‘š๐‘๐‘ข๐‘๐‘Ž, a musical instrument. Later the same name was also used for pipes and flutes made from hollowed elder stems, whose soft pith could easily be removed. Budding whistle-makers, however, may have to wait for spring when the young shoots are most easily worked.
