      Black Witch's Butter

      Exidia glandulosa

That is to say, not the butter of the black witch. Coal black, irregular, brain-like blobs, this jelly fungus is quite at home on dead beech on the forest floor.

This is Exidia glandulosa, which translates literally as ‘the oozing fungus with gland-like lumps’. I’ll stick with black butter.

Although not poisonous, it is recorded as having a rubbery to gelatinous texture, even when cooked, and no taste. I won’t butter my parsnips with it.
