Ashen celadon
Lichens are strange and so justify mysterious hues of oriental origin.
They are part fungus, the structural element, and within are microscopic photosynthetic partners busy at work. Often a green alga, sometimes a cyanobacterium, these give the fungus things it cannot provide for itself: food made from sunlight and green.
This one is Common Powderhorn.
The fungal part captures moisture while its tiny companions manufacture sugars through photosynthesis. A self-contained farming system, patient and persistent, slowly preparing wood and bark for decomposition.
