Today is the feast day of Saint Giles, he who gave his name to the commune formerly known as Obbrussel or Upper Brussels. It used to be the market garden of Brussels and was where tradition has the sprout being developed, appearing at least as early as the mid 17th century. It also had a castle of which only a couple of street names remember.
According to medieval legend, whilst living as a hermit in the forest, he was sustained by the milk of a hind. During a royal hunt, the animal fled to Giles for protection and an arrow, intended for the deer, struck Giles instead. Consequently, medieval representations show the hermit with a hind and sometimes an arrow. He survived the wound, but, with some versions saying he remained permanently disabled, Giles became a patron saint of people with physical disabilities and illnesses.
