      A boundary stone

Betwixt the ducal domain and the priory lands

Here is something that thousands walk past each year, without noticing it. It took me several visits to find it, and that was in mid-winter.

Located close to the St. Cornelius Chapel near Plek, at Groenendaal, in a few weeks’ time it will become invisible again, new growth and foliage hiding it from sight.

And what is it? According to the Bosmuseum, it’s a boundary stone. ‘Around the ponds of Groenendaal, small so-called “boundary stones” can be found in various places. They once marked the boundary between the ducal domain of Soignes on the one hand and the lands of the priory of Groenendaal on the other. ‘

What you see is just the very top. In the museum is a full-sized one on display.
